The day that many people in tech dreaded was coming soon, arrived yesterday.

Mr. Steven P. Jobs, Chairman and co-founder of Apple Computer; holder of over 300 patents; and all-around business genius, died of Pancreatic cancer yesterday, and the world that he changed is in mourning.  He leaves behind his wife Laurene Jobs, and three children.

Tony Perkins’ Always On is hosting the annual “Innovation Summit” at Santa Clara University (SCU).

This excellent high-level business conference, which i’ve attended for four years out of the past five, has been renamed this year. Formerly, it was the “Venture Capital Summit at Stanford”.

It has been relocated from Stanford University, 20 miles to the north (just West of Palo Alto), to Santa Clara University (SCU), in the heart of San Jose California.

Google Rocks Microsoft with Chrome OS announcement

Today Google announced that it will supply a personal computer operating system

…signaling a bold move on Redmond that will likely reverberate within big tech for many years to come.  The new operating system is to become available in beta form later this year, with broad availability during 2010.

Microsoft has been very vocally and publically working to get into Google’s core business – search and advertising – over the past few years. It looks like Google isn’t going to be held back from getting into Microsoft’s core business as well.  This is a good thing for everyone, as it’s bound to stimulate competition and innovation.  And it should become very interesting as it plays out; as this is definitely a “clash of the Titans”!

Early analyst reaction was primarily along the lines “interesting, but…”

It will take Google many years to budge Microsoft’s operating system market share.  But how many of those analysts have USED Google’s Chrome Browser, which will become the basis of this new personal computing operating system?

First impressions of the new Palm Pre Smartphone

I have owned this phone for 16 hours now, and have logged less than 45 minutes using the phone.  But already, i can tell you this phone is a sensation, and will become a significant factor in the Smartphone business – especially at Palm, Sprint, Apple, Research and Motion, and AT&T.

Had an interesting June 6th.  After camping out at the Sprint store and being one of only 41 people (out of over 100 in line) to get a Pre, I went to Orchard Valley Coffee in Campbell, and sat on a bench outdoors to sip on a cup of coffee.

Steve publishes inaugural article in the new SharePoint Magazine

This new SharePoint Magazine made it’s online debut this morning. The first issue includes an article just written by Steve, “Microsoft SharePoint from the iPhone: First Impressions”.

The article details how we’ve discovered that SharePoint workgroup productivity sites can be accessed from both 1st geneartion (2.5G) and 2nd generation (3G) iPhones, to accelerate the work of Startup teams. {mosimage}

I will be debating what kind of software applications are likely to be driving the mobile computing market with  some colleagues from the industry next week in Las Vegas at the NxtCom 08 conference.  While I was attending a different conference this week in Silicon Valley, i accidentally discovered a killer mobile productivity app:  running SharePoint sites from my iPhone.

Steve to debate next-generation Mobile Computing Apps at NxTComm 08 in Las Vegas

Steve Bell wil speak as part of a debate 1PM Thu June 19 in the Las Vegas Convention Center at the Broadband Wireless World / NxTComm 08 conference, co-sponsored by Light Reading, on the topic “New Data Applications in the Wireless Network”.  He’ll be addressing which classes of mobile computing applications are likely to be the most heavily used and successful in next-generation computing devices from (amongst others) Palm, Research in Motion, Apple’s now-open iPhone platform, and of course Google’s “Android” open mobile OS.  The panel will debate which applications are likely to drive growth, and the bandwidth demands they are likely to place upon network operators.

Apple, with a little help from KP, opens iPhone to developers

Today Apple went beyond opening up the iPhone to software developers with the expected software developer kit (SDK).

They also announced MS-Exchange Compatibility by licensing ActiveSync technology from Microsoft.

The third major component of this announcement was provided by John Doerr of Kleiner Perkins, who announced the establishment of a $100M “iFund”, dedicated to companies developing iPhone compatible software.
